Meran and Bolzano

The spa town Meran and the capital Bolzano

to the overview

The mild climate and lush vegetation of the spa town of Meran managed to attract the attention of Empress Elizabeth of Austria-Hungary, helping to provide the origins of modern tourism in Meran. Today, one can find shops and cafés, sights and museums, while strolling along medieval arcades, historic sights and Art Nouveau buildings. The charming narrow streets of the old town are full of boutiques, art galleries and cafes.

The historic hiking and walking trails such as the Tappeinerweg trail or the Summer and Winter Promenade, as well as the Empress Elizabeth Park, are most popular. Not far from the Art Nouveau Kurhaus are the new Meran Thermal Baths, with indoor and outdoor pools and extensive gardens.
Bolzano: 20 km away, in the centre of the region, is the South Tyrolean capital of Bolzano. The old town of Bolzano is full of museums and galleries, cafes and shops. The most popular attractions in the old city center are the 5000-year old prehistoric ice mummy Ötzi on display in the Museum of Archaeology, located next to the medieval fruit market (its origins date back to the 12th century) and to the Museion contemporary art space.
