Schwarzschmied Talk & More: Martino Gamper

22. October 2021

Do you speak design?
Designer Martino Gamper is considered one of the most creative and successful minds in South Tyrol. After an apprenticeship as a carpenter, he went to the Vienna Academy where he studied with Michelangelo Pistoletto, then he worked for Matteo Thun in Milan before going to the Royal Collage of Art in London. There he experienced his breakthrough with the project "100 Chairs in 100 Days and its 100 Ways". Gamper, who lives in London, always enjoys returning to South Tyrol and was a guest at the Schwarzschmied Talk on 14 October 2021, where Hannes Egger talked to him. The conversation revolved around Gamper's career on the one hand, but also around his view of design and craftsmanship. He spoke enthusiastically about the market stalls he designed in Merano and how their use is still accepted by the stall holders today. He also praised the quality of craftsmanship in South Tyrol, but criticised the fact that there are few craftspeople who develop their own language. After an extremely entertaining and inspiring conversation, Walter Garber aka DJ Veloziped put on Vynil music. The two revealed that the musician's stage name goes back to a creation by Martino Gamper - around a rave in a bunker in the mid-1990s.
