Tradition and Culture at the Christmas Markets

26. November 2022 - 1. January 2023

We've been on the lookout for original Christmas markets in South Tyrol - and we've found them.

If there's one thing our beautiful little region is famous for, it is the unique atmosphere during christmas times. An atmosphere that doesn't just reveal itself in the beaufiul winter landscape, but also in the contemplative Christkindl spirit that is to be found in the local Christmas markets. We went on a search for the most beautiful and original Christmas markets between Merano and Bolzano. We've stumbled uppon some very special venues. Almost all of them inherit tradition, culture and the original spirit of Christmas.

The Sterntaler Christmas Market in Lana
The Sterntaler Christmas Market in Lana is a traditional Christmas market in our beautiful little village, just a few steps away from the Hotel Schwarzschmied. Based on the age-old German tale of the Sterntaler, Sterntaler tickets are sold here to benefit the poor. Lovely prices are to be won! And the best part is, that part of the proceeds go out for a good cause. The market itself offers, like the others, local products from crafts and farming traditions.

The opening hours of the Sterntaler Christmas Market can be found here.

Ultner Christmas
Located at three locations in Ulten Valley, one of which is an old residential house that dates back to the 14th century, visitors are presented with products from the Zuanochten farmers’ market. A broad variety of local products and creations are offered at the respective stalls. One of the more beautiful things about the place is, that there’s also a strong emphasis on culinary delights: In the outdoor area of the farmhouse, which incidentally is also an archeology museum, specialities from and around the valley are offered.

Find out more about the Ultner Weihnacht here.

The Passeirer Christmas
Quite a unique approach to these special Christmas markets can be found in the Passeirer Weihnachten events. The events, every village organizes their own, are smaller, cozier and even more inviting and contemplative than their fellow markets. The four largest villages in the Passeirer Valley all organize their own events, which combine individual approaches under the motto "Passeier Christmas". For example, there is the Liechtr'zeit in St. Leonhard, the Moser Advent and the Riffin Advent. Events that only take place in this form in the Passeirer Valley.

Must see: Christmas markets in Merano and Bolzano
South Tyrol's famous Christmas markets in Bolzano and Merano are among the most charming events in the country. During the Christmas season, the iconic Christmas stalls offer art and craft products from all over the region. Embrace your sweet tooth between punch and sweet stalls and enjoy tasty pastries directly from the (build on site) oven. The magic peaks when the first snow transforms the markets in a magical winter wonderland of sight and wonder.

There are special events at the markets. Find out about them here.
