Artist in Residence: Teresa Gruber

22. - 27. March 2026

Her artistic work revolves around memories, emotions, and silence. At its core are the unconscious, the unspoken, and meanings that lie between the lines. In the beauty of simplicity - especially as it appears in nature - she finds space for new discoveries.

She often works with traditional textile techniques, consciously applying them outside their original context to create layered geometric works. These take the form of objects and drawings made from paper, thread, or metal. A recurring element is the circle, symbolizing unity and the cyclical nature of life.

For her work at Hotel Schwarzschmied, she chose translucent paper and a sewing machine as her primary tools. Starting from a simplified floor plan of the hotel, she followed an intuitive process, freely developing shapes and forms. In the quiet, almost meditative act of sewing, a cohesive body of work gradually emerged.

Although she usually works almost exclusively in black and white to preserve the clarity and reduction of these fundamental tones, here she allowed herself to be influenced by the surroundings – by spring and the fields nearby. As a result, touches of green and red found their way into the work.

Teresa was born in 1983 in Upper Austria and has lived and worked in Berlin since 2012. Trained as a goldsmith, she developed an early sensitivity for detail and materiality.

Her further path led through various creative fields, including model making for casting molds, stage and set construction, installation building, jewelry production, and restoration. These diverse experiences shape her artistic approach to material, form, and process today. Her works are created in her studio in Berlin-Oberschöneweide.
